Wednesday Words – Rook
The rook caws three times, pauses, caws again three times, pauses. He only ever gives three cries and then waits. Why? He perches on top of the street lamp, a black vulture-like silhouette against a snow grey sky. His cry echoes loud above the drone of bus and car but no one except me, looks up to search for him. Why? Can others really not hear his shout? Or do they just ignore him? A cry of nature amongst the concrete buildings.

I recollect pausing to listen to the song of a blackbird in the city and someone pausing to ask whether I was OK. I had paused simply to listen to the beauty of the bird song but people appear to regard this as odd.

it is strange, isn’t how we who listen and observe are considered odd by those too blind to see anything…!

Some people just don’t take the time to notice – summed up by WH Davies with “What is this life if full of care/we have no time to stand and stare….”
