Wednesday Words – Flowers

Flowers inspire me to write. I’m no good at flower arranging and don’t have time to spend ages on it. What is important for me is making the time to go out in the garden, once a week and choose the flowers to cut. It’s a kind of ritual – choosing for colour or smell or just beauty, cutting and taking the blooms to the kitchen. When I’ve stuck them in a vase and water, I notice things about each bloom that I’ve not seen before and from that, the poetry flows…
I love the variations of colour at different times of the year; yellow and purple at Easter, hues of blue in Spring, pinks, reds, orange and yellow in Summer and the changing leaves of Autumn… Scent and colour; both are so evocative.
