Requiem for the Bastards by Chris R. Sendrowski – Vivid, visceral and unpredictable – this is the un-put-downable sequel to Sand & Scrap. Sendrowski’s writing allows the reader to be THERE; in the jaws of the laxore, floating atop the Acid and in the disintegrating rusting structures of Tritan. The complex plot climaxes to an apocalyptic finale which left me reluctant leave this amazingly envisaged world… Definitely a re-reader! And if you enjoyed Moby Dick, you’ll appreciate the references to that tale in this one!
Haliden’s Fire by Chris R. Sendrowski is a wild ride from beginning to end. I loved this fast-paced, action-packed tale about Haliden Stroke, sometime artist, who is now a reluctant runner. Apocalyptic action against a burning landscape, this tale tells of fire, death, blood and heroism. This is perfect reading, if, like me, you can’t get enough of this world. Haven’t read Dregs of the Culver series yet? Read this one first. Already read Dregs of the Culver? Remain for a while in this incredible world and read Haliden’s Fire!
If you enjoy paranormal fantasy I recommend Mark of the Fae which is book 2 of a trilogy by KJ Baker. It’s action-packed from the start and unpredictable!
If you prefer gentler fantasy, I can recommend The Crafter’s Son and The Queen and the Soldier, by Matthew B Berg. This is a fully realised fantasy world with some thought provoking passages about magic, belief and martial strategy.
Sir Nigel, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle turned out to be an action-packed adventure in a totally different style to his Sherlock Holmes tales!
Any fantasy/sci fi writer worth their salt will want to read Machiavelli’s The Prince which is an amazing treatise on human nature.
Re-reads include The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien which never fails to entertain. A Year of Questions by Fiona Robyn is a must-read for all writers and artists as it really helps you to work out what is important to you and your creativity. I’ve also really enjoyed re-reading Thaw by Fiona Robyn. This book is a compassionate and sensitive exploration of self-harming and suicide that is both challenging and inspirational.
