Freya Pickard — I Write Her

The Butterfly Tree

15 May, 2020

Elsewhere in the garden the air is filled with fragrance; rose, wisteria and honeysuckle. In other flowerbeds, the plants stand neatly in their own space, not intruding on their neighbours. The soil there is weed-free and every plant knows its place. Many people wander through the old royal gardens on days when the sun shines. But no one comes to this corner.

I suppose it was the lack of order that drew me. I like bright colours and sweet perfumes but the riotous, unchecked growth beyond the silent fountains caught my eye. Others hurried by, looking for order and colour. Not me. I squeezed through the rusted, wrought-iron railings and trod on uncut grass, feeling dew soak my sandals and feet.

Behind me rose the rusty iron fence with sharp-edged stingers and needle-like thistles to deter the faint-hearted. On three sides, brick walls rose, partially concealed by the fecund growth of thin branches, narrow leaves and great sprays of purple-hued flowers. In the centre of the uncut grass, stood a single, stone seat; I sat upon it, marvelling at the sights and scents around me.

The breeze moved gently in the sheltered spot, making the long tendrils of flowers bob and weave, like slow-moving fireworks. Purple was the colour that I recognised first but as I gazed, I saw the varying shades; pink, lilac, violet, mauve, lavender, fuschia, magenta and white …

This is an extract from one of the stories in my recently published collection, The Butterfly Tree. This is part of my Dragonscale Diffusions collection!

Olin Heon

12 October, 2019

Olin Heon Volume Four of The Kaerling is now available online!

… The figure stooped down and took a bunch of keys from the warder’s belt. Lored backed away from the barred door, feeling nervous without the protection of his staff. Nilo inserted a key into the lock and turned it. The door swung open and Lored cautiously stepped out of his cell.

“I’m not going to eat you,” Nilo said gruffly. “I’m getting you out of here.”

“Look, I don’t mean to be ungrateful.” Lored hesitated. “But who are you and why are you rescuing me?”

“Long story,” replied the other. “I’ll explain when we’re safe. We’ve got to get to the upper levels in time to avoid the klanchiefs’ procession.”

“Procession?”

“Come on!” A large hand with an iron-like grip fastened onto the taku-kevir’s left arm.

“But we need to look for my staff,” Lored protested. “I can’t leave without it!”

“Got it already.” Nilo growled. “Along with your book and clothes and spare boots. But I couldn’t find your cloak of invisibility.”

They were marching quickly along the passageway, Lored almost running to keep up with Nilo.

“I don’t have a cloak of invisibility,” he panted.

“That explains why I couldn’t find it …”

My Mythology

14 February, 2019

My Mythology is now available to buy online!

If you prefer a paperback, you can find this volume as part of my paperback collection, This Is Me.

I’m releasing an e-version of My Mythology today because I know that a lot of people prefer e-books to paperbacks. I like both!

In volume two of Dragonscale Delvings, I deal with both serious and humorous matters. Death makes its way into my poems, understandably. But my flippant sense of humour is never far away – take Elf-conscious and Zombie Mushrooms, for instance.

I enjoy writing both short forms and epic poetry and you can find both kinds in this volume. Get a glimpse into my world of Nirunen, discover its historical characters that provide the background to my fantasy series, The Kaerling.

Some people think that poetry is just for poetic people. I don’t agree. Poetry is for everyone, whether or not you write it. My poetry is accessible, you don’t need a degree in English to read my work.

Take a look at the video about this volume at YouTube!

If you like video-poetry, check out Alien Watching and Compost Ghoul – both of which appear in this book!

And when you’ve had a chance to read My Mythology, I would love to know what you think about it!

Available at Amazon US, Amazon UK, Apple, Nook, Kobo and other online stores.

Happy New Year!

5 January, 2019

Happy New Year to you all!

I hope you had an enjoyable, restful and peaceful Christmas!

Just wanted to drop you all a line to let you know what I’m up to. I am planning on releasing two books in the first few months of this year!

My Mythology is a book of poetry, which can be found in my paperback, This Is Me. Next month I hope to release My Mythology as an e-book. In it I explore all my sources of inspiration…

I’m also hoping to release An Ancient Song. This is the third volume in The Kaerling series. If you’ve not yet read Silver Fire – it’s a free download! The second volume, Ambassador is available to purchase online in various stores. An Ancient Song tells of Otta’s continuing search for the unicorn and has a surprising twist at the end!

Over the winter I’ve been busy replenishing my creativity and have been painting once more! Here is of my creations that I wanted to share with you today along with a verse from a poem in My Mythology …

empty like

his hollow heart, the

blank mirror

gives nothing

back; taking only, never

satisfied
