Hidden Lands

15 September, 2020

“Beautifully written and it held my attention from start to finish.” E Baxter

Grey, crumpled bark, like ossified wrinkles spiralled around the trunk and up into the branches. It was not a tree he was familiar with but he stared at it, seeing the silver lichen that grew in tiny clusters on each rise of bark, leaving the dips in the tree’s skin dark and shadowed. The leaves above his head rustled faintly, although no breeze touched Lored’s cheek.

Tearing his eyes from the bark, the taku-kevir stared up at the rippling pattern of yellow light and green shadow. Each leaf had a serrated edge and pale veins branched in pairs from the centre. Although the sun did not appear to be shining, golden light glowed above the leaves, illuminating Lored’s face. He kept his head bent back, drinking in the other-light as if it was Power itself. The leaves flickered, shivered and fell still. The shadows ceased shifting and it was as if Lored stared into a bowl of sunshine.

The pack pony snorted nervously, breaking the spell. Lored stared around, wondering why he had stopped. He felt a shiver of recognition slip down his spine. No breeze and the leaves around him still moved. He had forgotten that the trees were more alive here in Zorat, that the whole forest responded to the will and command of the Zoratti …

This is a short extract from Hidden Lands, Volume Five of The Kaerling! This is one of the hidden lands that Lored, the taku-kevir from Olin Heon re-discovers during the course of the tale.

Today marks the launch of my paperback, The Day of Weird!

The Day of Weird Paperback Cover

The Day of Weird Paperback Cover

Erl looked up and saw something large and black descending through the rags of mist. Large webbed wings flapped with ponderous regularity and a fanged maw gaped open, emitting lightning and fire. Fear rooted Erl to the ground. This was something he had never seen before. Perhaps someone had once told him stories about such monsters, but never had he known such horror.

The ground shook beneath their feet as lightning flickered almost constantly. Erl’s fear increased as the monster descended and opened its fang-filled mouth. Then Otta pushed him aside and stepped out into the storm. Not knowing why, he tried to stop her. Erl reached out but hesitated to touch her. There was an energy about her that shimmered and danced all over her body. Fear washed through him, churning in his belly. Why was he frightened of his sister?

“Leave us!” Otta shouted into the howling night. Her voice sounded strange, as if someone else was speaking through her.

The smell of sulphur increased, then the beast flung up its head. Fearing the worst, Erl tried to grab Otta’s shoulder but felt as though he had burnt himself where his hand touched her clothes …

The Day of Weird contains the first three volumes of The Kaerling; Silver Fire, Ambassador and An Ancient Song. If you want to read the first book of The Kaerling as I intended it to be read, buy the paperback now!

Pursued by villagers for angering the gods, Otta seeks to evade capture whilst following the Unicorn’s Trail. She must deal with the dark side of her character and the memory loss of her twin as the influence of the kaerlings becomes more pronounced. Where will the Unicorn’s Trail lead her?

An Ancient Song

3 April, 2019

An Ancient Song explores the dark recesses of Otta’s soul and gives Erl a new meaning to his life.

An Ancient Song continues the twins’ quest for the “Unicorn’s Trail” with a shocking revelation at the end.

An Ancient Song takes the reader into a different world where the races are divided and immigrants seek to find their way in a strange and hostile land.

This is Volume Three of The Kaerling. It was a difficult book to write as I explored Otta’s inexplicable dislike of the despised Suryan. Like Nagaru, I wanted her to admit she had killed a man and to overcome her irrational prejudice towards the travellers who protect her.

Not everything is resolved in this volume, but, as Nagaru tells her towards the end, it’s a beginning!

Want to find out exactly how Otta and Erl escape from Aura Vere? Want to know how they discover the truth about the “Unicorn’s Trail”? Want to meet more of the Kaerlings who are both attractive and repelling at the same time?

If the answer is yes to one or more of the above questions, you need to buy An Ancient Song, now! Available at Amazon UK, Amazon US, iBooks, Nook, Kobo and many other online stores.
