Don’t you just love the painting by Elisa Choi on the front cover?!

In this issue I describe what it’s like in the “quiet months” when running a B&B.

When we’re closed, I still have to answer the telephone and deal with online bookings. We try and keep to a regular routine otherwise we find we get too tired. We’re usually up by 8am …

I also continue my explorations of Dartmoor in haiku and elfje.

The Attar of Chervil: Episode One

19 March, 2018

Dracomagan was nowhere to be seen. Parsley and Sorrel waited for her, whilst Sir Peagreen stood guard. Eyes glowed in the dark greenness and a chill wind rattled dead leaves.
“I think it’s werewolves and vampires…” Parsley moaned.
“… and horrible beasties!” Dracomagan appeared in the gloom, leggings gleaming. She grinned.
“Can’t see there’s anything to smile about,” grumbled Parsley. “Is there another way round?”
“No. One path leads to a blind canyon with no way over it and the other way just dumps you in that raging river we crossed yesterday. So, the quickest way to Nimue, is through that.”
Dracomagan pointed at the green gloaming and led the way forwards …

The Oil of Sage: Episode 4

12 December, 2016

Stiffly, he rose to his feet and straightened his back. Hobbling to the door he bolted it fast and then turned and extinguished all but one of the candles. He lifted a smooth, unadorned silver bowl from a shelf and set it on a low table near the embers of the fire. Beside the door stood a silver jug with water that his servant had collected last full moon from the hill streams nearby.
Carefully, the old man poured the water into the bowl, not spilling a drop. Setting the jug on the floor he waited for the water in the bowl to become still, feeling the ache in legs and back. He waited, feeling the minutes pass towards midnight. Eventually he stooped and breathed once on the water’s surface.
Mist swirled in the clear depths, parting to reveal rocky crags and moss-covered trees. Merlin stared silently, watching the visions as they unfolded to reveal a twisted, grey peak of stone. He shivered as he waved a hand over the bowl and the pictures vanished…
What has Merlin seen in the scrying bowl? What will Dracomagan and her friends do next in order to rescue Parsley’s lover?

Domestic Observations …

25 October, 2016

Lantune 3 – that struck me deeply and I found it most haunting. As for Merlin becoming intrigued – he’s not the only one! It is now a case of watch this space! S Evans
Congratulations on publication of your short story e-book “Rusalka Ritual.” Fine job with video. I had no problem with hearing it, just had to turn up the speakers a little. Loved the newsletter. Nice break for me to read it. Enjoyed all content. Great idea to shift focus on your blog. Exciting about upcoming interviews. You’re inspiring. Keep up your energetic writing and publishing. Wishing you the best always. P Spork
Your domestic observations are absolutely lovely! They are alive and tangible and audible and visual and aural. Just what poetry should be. As for Dracomagan – it goes without saying that I love her and everything she does. L Turner

The Oil of Sage – episode 3

26 September, 2016

“We spent three days scouring the countryside for him, together with all Lord Thyme’s people, but it was as if he’d been spirited away. Can you help us, Merlin?”
The old man lost his train of thought and stared into those pale blue eyes; cold like moonlit steel. He couldn’t remember Dracomagan ever asking him for help before.
“I’m not asking for myself,” she said hastily. “But Lord Thyme is one of my most loyal subjects and besides, Parsley has rather a crush on Tym.”
Parsley blushed as pink as a summer rose and Sorrel laughed.
“How long will that last?” The tall woman mocked her affectionately.
“Can you?” Dracomagan ignored Sorrel’s banter, still staring at Merlin.
“I might.”
“Good.” Her Majesty turned her attention to the cold soup, mopping it up with a hunk of bread.
“I need more information though.” Merlin said reluctantly. He hated getting involved with Dracomagan’s adventures. In his experience, things always took a turn for the worse…
