One day I went out to fight a dragon …

4 December, 2018

I got up this morning and put on my new leggings.

“They’re nice.” Claire said brightly. “Where did you get them from?”

“The market.” I replied, pulling a purple tie-dye T-shirt over my head. “They were the last pair there!”

“Nice colours!” Abigail rolled her ‘r’s as only the Cornish can do.

“They’re my dragonscale leggings.” I told them.

They looked at each other with an ‘Oh dear, she’s off again’ look.

“And I think I’ll go and fight a dragon today!”

“Why not?” They said. “We’ve got teaching practice. See you this evening!”

Why not? I thought to myself. If there was to be a story about how dragonscales were made into leggings, how would it start? One day I went out to fight a dragon… But you don’t find dragons just anywhere. There aren’t many around nowadays.

In the Other World there’s plenty still. Of course, most of them are getting old and decrepit, but they are dragons. The thing is, they don’t live in these parts of the woods. Look at it all. Blue sky, green leaves, sunlight slanting between the tree trunks. I can hear the lilting voices of nymphs and dryads calling to each other as they flit about the streams and around the boles of trees. Walking sedately in and out of the cool shadows I see the equine forms of centaurs. And here and there gleams the finely polished horn of a unicorn. All this is very pleasant but it’s not what I’m looking for. And how did I get here anyway?!

I walk along the shady path, searching for signs of a dragon. I cannot see any fire-blasted glades, so I ask a dryad if there are any dragons nearby.

“Any what?” She looks puzzled, her green hair falling across her face.

“Dragons! You know, whopping great winged lizards that breathe fire.”

“Oh, them!” She flicks her hair back. “We haven’t seen any for years. Try the north. There might be some there.”

“Which way’s north?”

“The way you’re going.”

“Thanks!” But she’s already disappeared under a leafy branch.

Just what is going on? I’m still dressed in my tie-dye T-shirt but instead of leggings, I’m wearing jogging bottoms. I thought I was meant to be attending a lecture today. Oh, well! This place seems far more interesting!

A drop of blood …

Clippings_September_2018_LI

Parsley stood before the throne, staring down at her beloved and the green globe and realised she had no idea what to do.

Behind her, she could hear steel on stone. Parsley glanced over her shoulder to see the statues hurl themselves at Dracomagan and Peagreen. Nimue’s golden head turned from the fighting and the green eyes widened as she saw where Parsley was standing.

Sorrel unsheathed her sword. “Get on with it!” She ordered and stepped towards the sorceress.

Then Parsley remembered. A drop of blood had opened the way in the enchanted forest. Another drop of blood had woken Tym from his enchanted sleep …

Dragonscale Leggings – an excerpt

21 September, 2016

26th June, Mid-Morning
Who am I? Where am I? And what on earth am I doing here in the blazing hot sun outside a cave in the middle of a mountainous wilderness with the decaying carcass of some huge monster? I’m wearing really strange clothes and a green cloak type of thing. This cloak has pockets and in them I’ve found this notebook and pencil and something that makes me want to call it tinder and flint. Notebook is bound in leather with recycled type paper inside. The pencil is thick and stubby. The corpse really stinks. I feel sick.
Lunchtime
On the way to be sick (not sure where I was going, there aren’t any loos round here), I found a white horse. It just stared at me and when I started throwing up behind one of the grey boulders lying around, it trotted off. I lay down for a bit, feeling vulnerable and pathetic. The white horse re-appeared while I was still feeling yuck and looked me up and down as if it knew me. Hauling myself to my feet I staggered over to it and hung onto its neck. It then led me step by step to a little gully where – how wonderful! – there was a stream! Water never tasted so good! Have a splitting headache so am going to sleep in the shade of a rock near the stream.
Teatime?
Headache gone. Stomach churning – perhaps the water was polluted. Feel light-headed. Horse has disappeared again. Sun not so hot. Brains completely scrambled. Am I really myself? I ask this because I am wearing the oddest pair of leggings I’ve ever seen. They look like grey and purple mottled scales. Very odd. I don’t remember buying them. I’m wearing knee-length leather boots, which are making my feet hot. I didn’t buy them either. The T-shirt I’m wearing I bought at a student sale. Aha! So I’m a student! What of and where at?
These are the opening paragraphs to my novel, Dragonscale Leggings, which is now available as an e-book!

The Rusalka Ritual

22 August, 2016
I’m so excited!
It’s here!
My first short story collection!
The Rusalka Ritual and Other Stories has been published!
What’s it about?
Five differing tales give you an insight into Dracomagan’s life after Dragonscale Leggings. Five stories portray my heroine from varying viewpoints. The collection deals with redemption, disappointment, dark enchantments and a morning of golf. I talk more about the collection and read a short extract in TRRAOS!
You can buy the e-versions at Amazon. If, like me, you prefer paperback, I will announce when it will be available at My Books Page.
It has been a really difficult year for me so far, which, if you receive my Newsletter, you will know about. Currently trying to deal with 2 deaths in my immediate family, living in an emotionless state and awaiting the results of a CT Scan and blood tests to see if the cancer has returned or not. But, despite all this, I have managed to publish two books this year! Even difficult situations can inspire growth and productivity.
I look forward to your comments on The Rusalka Ritual and Other Stories! Please feel free to share and re-blog this post!

Chapter Twenty Three

11 March, 2015
Feel very strange but peaceful. Spent most of yesterday writing down all my memories. But not in here. There was some paper on the desk in my bedroom and I’ve made a kind of envelope for my memories and sealed them inside. It’s weird knowing you live somewhere else but are really alive here.
I want to know where Tygar comes from! But I’ve just signed a contract to help Merlin find Sir Lancelot and put him back to sleep until Arthur returns. I still think that killing the Bad Dragons is the destiny Sama Conn talked about. Oh yes! Piera’s offered to accompany us to find Lancelot. I hope he doesn’t fancy me. It would be cruel to have to deter him as I did Agravaine!
Only a week till Yule apparently. Suppose I’d better write a letter to the parents and then perhaps see about some lunch. And after that I will go and visit Tygar – Piera has told me how to find the stables. I wish that horse could talk!
