Erl looked up and saw something large and black descending through the rags of mist. Large webbed wings flapped with ponderous regularity and a fanged maw gaped open, emitting lightning and fire. Fear rooted Erl to the ground. This was something he had never seen before. Perhaps someone had once told him stories about such monsters, but never had he known such horror.

The ground shook beneath their feet as lightning flickered almost constantly. Erl’s fear increased as the monster descended and opened its fang-filled mouth. Then Otta pushed him aside and stepped out into the storm. Not knowing why, he tried to stop her. Erl reached out but hesitated to touch her. There was an energy about her that shimmered and danced all over her body. Fear washed through him, churning in his belly. Why was he frightened of his sister?

“Leave us!” Otta shouted into the howling night. Her voice sounded strange, as if someone else was speaking through her.

The smell of sulphur increased, then the beast flung up its head. Fearing the worst, Erl tried to grab Otta’s shoulder but felt as though he had burnt himself where his hand touched her clothes …

The Day of Weird contains the first three volumes of The Kaerling; Silver Fire, Ambassador and An Ancient Song. If you want to read the first book of The Kaerling as I intended it to be read, buy the paperback now!

Pursued by villagers for angering the gods, Otta seeks to evade capture whilst following the Unicorn’s Trail. She must deal with the dark side of her character and the memory loss of her twin as the influence of the kaerlings becomes more pronounced. Where will the Unicorn’s Trail lead her?

This paperback is available at Amazon UK and Amazon US and other Amazon stores.

Videos about The Kaerling can be found at Volume One, Volume Two, Volume Three and TDOW.

Happy reading!

The Day of Weird – cover reveal

8 January, 2020

What do you think of the front cover for my next paperback?

The Day of Weird Paperback Cover

The Day of Weird Paperback Cover

The Day of Weird contains the first 3 volumes of The Kaerling; Silver Fire, Ambassador and An Ancient Song.

If, like me, you prefer the feel of a real book in your hands and the smell of newly printed paper – this one will be available in a couple of weeks time!

Once again, Jonathon B. Hoyt has designed the jacket, using a sketch from Kombmaker’s unique collection.

Like the first three e-books, the paperback has a grey cover and I think Kombmaker’s sketch captures the countryside of Falna through which Otta and Erl travel.

What do you think? Will you be buying it?!

On a different note, don’t forget that Pure Haiku is opening early this year for haiku submissions. There are 3 themes and the submissions windows will open in January, February and March for each theme. To find out more, please visit Pure Haiku and sign up to receive notifications when submissions are being accepted!

Due to time constraints, I’m posting shorter blog posts this year. Over the next few months I’ll be sharing some “small stones” and paintings about Clouds. The paintings may not always match the words!

And finally, my Newsletter has undergone a huge makeover! If you’re not already signed up, please sign up for this monthly freebie HERE. My Newsletters are now shorter and will appear each month. (Don’t worry, I’m still giving away one short story each year in three episodes!) Find out why my current subscribers love reading my Newsletter!

One day I went out to fight a dragon …

4 December, 2018

I got up this morning and put on my new leggings.

“They’re nice.” Claire said brightly. “Where did you get them from?”

“The market.” I replied, pulling a purple tie-dye T-shirt over my head. “They were the last pair there!”

“Nice colours!” Abigail rolled her ‘r’s as only the Cornish can do.

“They’re my dragonscale leggings.” I told them.

They looked at each other with an ‘Oh dear, she’s off again’ look.

“And I think I’ll go and fight a dragon today!”

“Why not?” They said. “We’ve got teaching practice. See you this evening!”

Why not? I thought to myself. If there was to be a story about how dragonscales were made into leggings, how would it start? One day I went out to fight a dragon… But you don’t find dragons just anywhere. There aren’t many around nowadays.

In the Other World there’s plenty still. Of course, most of them are getting old and decrepit, but they are dragons. The thing is, they don’t live in these parts of the woods. Look at it all. Blue sky, green leaves, sunlight slanting between the tree trunks. I can hear the lilting voices of nymphs and dryads calling to each other as they flit about the streams and around the boles of trees. Walking sedately in and out of the cool shadows I see the equine forms of centaurs. And here and there gleams the finely polished horn of a unicorn. All this is very pleasant but it’s not what I’m looking for. And how did I get here anyway?!

I walk along the shady path, searching for signs of a dragon. I cannot see any fire-blasted glades, so I ask a dryad if there are any dragons nearby.

“Any what?” She looks puzzled, her green hair falling across her face.

“Dragons! You know, whopping great winged lizards that breathe fire.”

“Oh, them!” She flicks her hair back. “We haven’t seen any for years. Try the north. There might be some there.”

“Which way’s north?”

“The way you’re going.”

“Thanks!” But she’s already disappeared under a leafy branch.

Just what is going on? I’m still dressed in my tie-dye T-shirt but instead of leggings, I’m wearing jogging bottoms. I thought I was meant to be attending a lecture today. Oh, well! This place seems far more interesting!

Want to read more? Dragonscale Leggings is now available as both an e-book and a paperback at Amazon UK & Amazon US! Find out more about this novel in my video at YouTube!

This Is Me – peek inside …

27 May, 2018
pink little stoma rosebud bright
innocently gleams in the light
who could believe such pure flesh
could vomit forth such filthiness?

birthed from the ninth wave
foaming mane, spindrift tail
fertile, burgeoning

to see through a glass darkly, mirror, of course, but what if
it also meant a window, grimed, muddy with mortality
only when you pass beyond, does the view at last make sense

This Is Me

19 May, 2018

Sometimes, the past is too painful to put into prose.
Sometimes, the past can only be portrayed through poetry.
This Is Me, is my first anthology containing 3 volumes of poetry and it is available in paperback from Amazon!
Dragonscale Delvings is the series title for my poetry publications. This paperback contains my first three poetry collections; Insides (also available as an e-book), My Mythology & This Is Me.
Insides is a hands-on experience of cancer. Discover what it is like to find out you have cancer. How do you deal with a temporary stoma? How do you cope after major open surgery? How do you even start recovering? And how do you get through the dreadful experience of chemotherapy?

My Mythology is a compendium of everything and everyone who has inspired me to write. From the tales of the Bible to Celtic and Norse legends, from unicorns to dragons, from vampires to werewolves, from Dr Who to Space Oddity … Read on for an inspiring smorgasbord of verse!
This Is Me is about my daily life; writing, working, dancing, reading, observing, loving … I often find it hard to put into prose how I really feel. (Writing stories is easy – I’m being someone else). But real life is hard to capture in plain prose. Thus I express myself and my innermost feelings through the varied and flexible forms of poetry.
In this book I am honest, playful and brutally truthful. This is me. The real me. If you really want to know the person behind the name, read this book. You’ll understand me better than the people who know me face to face but refuse to read my writings! “I love your beautiful way with words … You bring light and truth with your creativity …” Julie P.

And, as usual, I’ve prepared a short video as a teaser to get you reading! Check it out at YouTube
The E-book versions of My Mythology and This Is Me will be released at some point in the future!
Please feel free to share and re-blog this post!
