Freya’s Novels

25 April, 2018

It’s nearly the summer holidays! Have you stocked up yet on your summer reading? If you haven’t, here are some suggestions …
If you enjoy romance and dark magic mixed with intrigue in a fantastical setting, can I suggest my Isu Magan series? Both books are available as ebooks and paperbacks. Vintrig’s Kingdom ($3) begins the tale of Isu Magan, a lonely princess who is the only heir to the kingdom’s founder. Her life is bound by taboo and she is content not to marry until she meets the travelling musician, Sama Conn, and falls in love with him.
The sequel, Vintrig’s Throne ($3) concludes the tale, but not before Isu’s hopes have been raised and then cruelly dashed. Although she is crowned queen, Isu finds herself on trial for her life and only one thing can save her; The Law of Substitution!
But if you prefer humourous novels, then perhaps Dragonscale Leggings might be more suitable for you. But, I have to warn you, it is a dangerous book to read. Why? Because if you don’t have a sense of humour, hate strong female leads and don’t like fantasy worlds, you’ll be wasting your time reading it!

This is chick-lit in a fantasy world. Think Alice in Wonderland meets Bridget Jones’ Diary. Come and adventure with Dracomagan and her trusty stallion, Tygar, as they travel through the Otherworld, trying to find her memory, evade Merlin and keep on the right side of the law.
At present, Dragonscale Leggings ($3) is only available as an ebook – the paperback should be out by Christmas 2018! Happy Reading!

Freya’s Paperbacks

5 March, 2018
If, like me, you prefer reading a paperback to Kindle, you will be overjoyed to learn that I now have 3 paperbacks in publication!

My most recent paperback in print is, of course, Vintrig’s Throne.
This is the sequel to Vintrig’s Kingdom (see below) and brings to a conclusion the story of Isu that began in the first volume.
If you enjoy tales of romance and swashbuckling action mixed in with biased trials and dark magic, this is the book for you!
With its blood red cover you can’t miss it! And once again, I’ve used a painting by Kombmaker because it made me think of the terrain around Vintrig’s Castle!

Secondly …
… there’s my first collection of short stories, The Rusalka Ritual & Other Stories.
These are tales that involve Dracomagan, the narrator of Dragonscale Leggings. They’ll make you laugh, shiver and cry…
If you like fairy tales with a twist, get yourself a copy!
I had to use this painting by Kombmaker because he unwittingly created a picture that was straight out of my otherworld!

Thirdly …
… there’s my novel Vintrig’s Kingdom.
This is the first volume of Isu Magan’s tale – a snow white cover for a virgin princess living in a monochrome world. Again, it is one of Kombmaker’s sketches – a castle in a snowstorm… You’ll need to read this one before you buy the sequel!
All of these three books are available as e-books The Isu Magan series are priced at $3 each and The Rusalka Ritual is currently $1. Paperback prices vary depending from whom you buy them. I will be releasing my 4th paperback in the next few months! Keep a look out here for it – what will it be? A novel? Another short story collection? Or perhaps it will be a poetry anthology…

Freya’s Paperbacks

3 April, 2017

If you are a regular reader of this blog, you will know that last year I published 5 books!

All of them are available as e-books but two of them are also available as paperbacks!

I much prefer a paperback to an e-book. I do a lot of my proof reading of my own manuscripts on my Kindle, so reading an e-book for me is like working. Reading a paperback is a luxury!

Vintrig’s Kingdom is the first in my Isu Magan series. When Isu Magan, heir to Vintrig’s Throne, finds the journal of a vanished Scriber, her perceptions of history and the truth are challenged. A growing distrust of her loyal and powerful Counsellor, initiates rebellious and frightening thoughts within her heart. Adding to this disruption of her ordered life, Isu finds herself attracted to the itinerant musician, Sama Conn.

The Rusalka Ritual is a collection of short stories all of which have Dracomagan (from Dragonscale Leggings) in them at some point. Five tales set in fantastic locations; an arid canyon, a smoke-wreathed ale house, a moonlit sea, a haunted inn and a golf course. Five tales encompassing human emotion; expectations disappointed, self-sacrificing love for the unlovable, will power that overcomes dark enchantment, bravery in the face of evil and fear of the unknown in hum-drum life. Five narrative voices ranging from a young child, a redeemed murderer, a strong-willed young woman, damsels awaiting rescue and a retired banker haunted by death …

ritual to fading …

14 November, 2016
Since my last “where I’ve been published” post in August, life has changed irrevocably.
Instead of spending my time sending poetry and short stories out to editors who might like to read them and accept them for their magazines and only occasionally pay me for them, I’ve been concentrating on publishing my own work. With one notable exception…

When I discovered I had cancer in 2014, I vowed that if I survived, I would stop wasting time asking other people to publish my work, and get on with it myself! So, here are my published works since August…
The Rusalka Ritual & Other Stories consists of five tales that in some way connect with Dracomagan. The female warrior does not tell any of these tales, instead, the reader can view Dracomagan through different sets of eyes and discover surprising aspects of my heroine’s character.
From a child to a murderer, the narrative voices are varied. Water faeries, Slow Death, male magic and is that Old One Eye lurking in the shadows on the golf course? These tales are quirky, deep and imaginative.

Dragonscale Leggings was released as an e-book in September. Up until that point, readers could only buy the paperback version. The original paperback (blue cover with a potato peeler on it) has now been withdrawn from publication. I am working on releasing a second edition in paperback in 2017, with the brand new cover, of course!
If you like strong, female characters, you will enjoy Dragonscale Leggings. Written in the form of a diary, the narrator, Dracomagan, takes the reader on a ride through a lush and dreamlike Otherworld. Having lost her memories, she has no idea who she is. Discovering her supposed trade (dragon slaying) is illegal for a woman to carry out, she sets out to explore this strange new world and discover who she really is. None of the characters conform to type but if you don’t have a sense of humour, this probably isn’t the book for you!
Although targeted at the “YA Fantasy” market, I have discovered that a range of ages and backgrounds enjoy this novel about Dracomagan. It is definitely an antidote to long series where the last books contain characters who weren’t even born in the first book… Although I have nothing against vampires and werewolves, this tale isn’t about them. It’s about good dragons who refuse to fight, bad dragons who are too lazy to fight and a female dragon slayer who is desperate to prove she is a dragon slayer!

Insides is my first ever poetry collection with a forward by Italian poet, Claudia Messelodi.
Released in mid-October, this collection traces my journey through cancer; from colostomy to open surgery, through chemotherapy and the long, slow road to recovery. Join me in this celebration of life and death.
I use a variety of poetic styles to express my thoughts and feelings as I go through the traumas of 2014 & 2015. Blank verse and Freyan verse alternate with short forms such as haiku, elfje, tanka, lantune and many more. If you’re a cancer sufferer I hope you will find comfort. If you have no experience of cancer, get a glimpse into our world…
And the one exception? My poem, Fading, was published in October in Agnishatdal Kartik. If you like Bengali history, culture and stories, you will enjoy this delightful, unusual magazine which is available at Agnishatdal Ezine
If you love FREEREADS, I now keep a list of all the stories and poetry you can read for free at FREE STUFF!
