Changes …

I’m no longer able to use Facebook! It takes so long to load that I very often can’t read other peoples’ posts, or, if I can read them, I can’t respond to them. I also can’t always schedule posts on my Author Page. Very frustrating! So please don’t try to contact me via Facebook because I’m only checking in there every 1-2 months. If you need to contact me, either send an email to freya.pickard@gmail.com or leave a comment on this site.

Other News

Jonathon B. Hoyt with whom I have collaborated over the years in both my Newsletter and for the covers of my books, now has his very own blog! Please take a look and follow and like if you enjoy his work at Jonathon B. Hoyt.

Pure Haiku is once again CLOSED to submissions. Selected haiku from the theme of Volcano, will be appearing between 1st September and 30th November. Sign up to Pure Haiku to receive notifications! And thank you to everyone who sent in their haiku for my consideration!

August is a Rest Month for me so I won’t be online now until the beginning of September. I intend to work on my vampire poetry, read a lot of paperbacks, create pastel and watercolour pictures, listen to music and rest… See you in the autumn!

Much love Freya xxx

November Catch Up

18 November, 2021

A mega thank you to Editor Susi Bocks for nominating my poem, Sailing, for The Pushcart Prize! Wow! I am overwhelmed! You can read my poem and find out about Pushcart by clicking on the links.

A huge thank you to Swords & Sorcery Magazine for publishing my short story, Bladesong. If you’re into The Kaerling series, this tale will give you an insight into the dark world of the First Age of Nirunen and of the horrors the ancient heroes had to face.

And a big thank you to Cold Moon Journal for publishing my haiku about the ocean recently!

Thank you also to Spillwords for publishing my poem, Bite Me, recently. This is a vampire poem with a difference; can you tell which one is the victim and which is the predator?

And thank you too to Luna for publishing my poem, Mist, back in September. This poem portrays a scene from my latest book, Uneasy Allies.

Have you bought your copy of Uneasy Allies yet? It’s the latest volume in The Kaerling series. If you have already read it and enjoyed it, I would love it if you could leave a one line comment about why you liked it at the store you purchased it from!

Pure Haiku closed to submissions on 31st October on the theme of Ghostlight. I’m in the process of selecting the haiku to be published at Pure Haiku between 1st January and 31st March 2022.

My Patreon supporters have been reading my tales about Kirri and Ebkah, two heroes from the First Age of Nirunen, and they’ve also been receiving my unique poetry postcards every month, painted and written by me! If you’d like to get more of a glimpse into the mysterious world of Nirunen as well as helping me promote my books, please consider donating on my Patreon profile!

My Newsletter readers have received three character studies this year as well as poetry and a story. The third and final part of my serialised story, Resurrection, will be available in December.

I’ll be making some changes to my Newsletter and this blog in 2022 so watch this space and I’ll explain more in January next year!

That’s all for now, as I’ve been busy writing volumes 10 – 12 of The Kaerling recently – 89,000 words in October. Who needs Nanowrimo?!!!

I’ll be back next week with my final post of the year and a new book cover reveal. See you then!

Don’t forget …

Emergence …

13 January, 2019

Pure Haiku is currently OPEN to Submissions.

The THEME is EMERGENCE.

This time, you are not allowed to use the word Emergence in your haiku/senyru (and you cannot use this word in the title, if you choose to provide titles for your submissions). I want to receive haiku/senyru that are implicit in their mentions of EMERGENCE.

The OED defines the word EMERGENCE as “The process of becoming visible after being concealed.” Further definitions can be found at Oxford Dictionaries.

Delight me and surprise me with your haiku that paint vivid pictures of EMERGENCE. Don’t be confined to the obvious, be subtle, be clever, be imaginative! As always I’m looking for excellent use of language and words that conjure up clear, vivid pictures; show, don’t tell.

There will be 28 slots for individual haiku plus space for up to 5 days for a single featured haiku writer.

The DEADLINE for submissions is 25th January 2019 at midnight.

EMERGENCE themed haiku written in the traditional/classical form (5-7-5 syllables) will be posted on this site between March & April 2019.

Pure Haiku is currently OPEN to Submissions.

The THEME is CELESTIAL BODIES.
