a skiff tied to a willow
waiting to rush downriver
to the sea

winter’s ice relents
vast arterial network
lifeblood of the land

watery spell
filling springs and rivers
cat watches raindrops

raindrops like jewels
glisten in pure white light
on dark naked twigs

winter fire
a branch of sage lit
smoke for purification

wide flowing river
rooted tree grows tall and wide
eco-system thrives

Methuselah Bristlecone Pine
thousands of years old
its California home a secret

secrets discovered
steam, ice, droplets; growing land,
tall trees, lush pastures …

Thank you for taking the time to read the results of a recent collaboration with Giselle Maya in France! My verses are the ones in italics.

This Freyan Verse was inspired by the deaths of 3 close writing friends between January 2014 and June 2015. It also reflects on my own brushes with death between July 2014 and January 2015. Wednesday Words – Chapter Nine

12 November, 2014
It’s been a difficult day. Gatus insisted I ride at the back of the column. Tygar wanted to lead. I understand Gatus wanting me at the back – in case the dragon attacks us. But would Tygar listen? I think he wanted to strut along like a king in front of his harem. I reminded him that they weren’t his mares. But he didn’t want to know. After I called him an ‘incorrigible reprobate’ he went on one of his ‘I hate you and the entire world’ moods. My arms feel three times the length they were this morning. He’s been having it easy for too long.
We’ve been travelling north west for a week, across the yellow grassed plains (that was poetic wasn’t it?!), following a south flowing river in search of a ford. Kaga and I have been having sword practice everything evening between making camp and supper. (I think I’ve improved – he didn’t have a word of criticism last night!) Why is it that all the nice men are taken…
This is an excerpt from Chapter Nine of my novel Dragonscale Leggings
