Freya’s Paperbacks

3 April, 2017

If you are a regular reader of this blog, you will know that last year I published 5 books!

All of them are available as e-books but two of them are also available as paperbacks!

I much prefer a paperback to an e-book. I do a lot of my proof reading of my own manuscripts on my Kindle, so reading an e-book for me is like working. Reading a paperback is a luxury!

Vintrig’s Kingdom is the first in my Isu Magan series. When Isu Magan, heir to Vintrig’s Throne, finds the journal of a vanished Scriber, her perceptions of history and the truth are challenged. A growing distrust of her loyal and powerful Counsellor, initiates rebellious and frightening thoughts within her heart. Adding to this disruption of her ordered life, Isu finds herself attracted to the itinerant musician, Sama Conn.

The Rusalka Ritual is a collection of short stories all of which have Dracomagan (from Dragonscale Leggings) in them at some point. Five tales set in fantastic locations; an arid canyon, a smoke-wreathed ale house, a moonlit sea, a haunted inn and a golf course. Five tales encompassing human emotion; expectations disappointed, self-sacrificing love for the unlovable, will power that overcomes dark enchantment, bravery in the face of evil and fear of the unknown in hum-drum life. Five narrative voices ranging from a young child, a redeemed murderer, a strong-willed young woman, damsels awaiting rescue and a retired banker haunted by death …

How I choose covers for short stories …

27 March, 2017

A few weeks ago I posted about how I choose covers for my novels. Today I want to talk about choosing covers for short stories.
Stories are different from Novels in their length, structure and aim. With a short story, you have to be in the storytelling world immediately. The action has to happen quickly and there needs to be a good resolution before the end of the tale. So far, I’ve published a single short story plus one short story collection.
I had very clear ideas on what I wanted for The Essence of Thyme. As the first in a series (originally published as a free read in my Newsletter) I wanted the covers of the following books to link back to this one.
I knew from the start that I wanted a vast green globe on the front to portray the green globe mentioned towards the end of the story. (It is key to the following two stories as well). JBH suggested the shadowed lattice work giving the cover a slightly darker, more haunted feel. This, I felt, went suitably with the silent castle and slightly puzzling enchantment of Lord Thyme’s son.
I knew I didn’t want a fairy tale picture because although this story is a re-telling of Sleeping Beauty, it is most definitely NOT a sugar sweet, happy ending …

I came across the picture I used for The Rusalka Ritual & Other Stories when I was going through Kombmaker’s portfolio. As soon as I saw it, I recognised it as being the woodland that the companions travel through in The Rusalka Ritual.
When JBH came to manipulate the painting, I advised him on the part of it that had to appear on the front cover, namely the waterfall with the golden light above it. Surprisingly, JBH stretched the painting digitally, cutting off the trees to either side. But boy, did it work! I was so pleased with it. At JBH’s suggestion, we used that particular font with red ink, to make it look as though the words were written in blood …
This collection is a series of fairy tales, but there aren’t necessarily any fairy tale endings, which I why I think the cover works; it makes me think of Grimm’s fairy stories. My tales will make you laugh, but there’s always something slightly sinister about Dracomagan’s Otherworld.
As always, I’m trying to be different! Do you think I’ve succeeded? Which of these books would you buy?

The Rusalka Ritual – paperback!

5 October, 2016

It’s 7 weeks since I launched the e-book of The Rusalka Ritual and I am pleased to announce that the paperback is now available at Amazon!
In case you missed the original post, the collection consists of five tales giving the reader an insight into Dracomagan’s life after Dragonscale Leggings. The stories portray my heroine from varying viewpoints and deal with redemption, disappointment, dark enchantments and a morning of golf! I’ve made a video about it at TRRAOS!
I hope you enjoy reading the collection! Please feel free to share and re-blog this post!

About Freya Pickard

6 April, 2016

Freya doesn’t write about imaginary worlds; she writes about imaginative ones. These are worlds that could be real in a parallel universe or another time dimension. She does not promote escapism; instead she takes her readers into a refreshing place so that they return to their normal lives feeling strengthened and renewed.

A cancer survivor, Freya is inspired by her garden, a variety of music and beautifully written books. Her first novel is Dragonscale Leggings and her quarterly newsletter features serialised short stories about her heroine, Dracomagan.

Freya likes to hear from people who have bought her book and want to buy her forthcoming novels and collections. She likes to hear that people have enjoyed her work so much that they’ve bought her books for all their family members and friends. She also loves to hear from people who sign up to her newsletter to get a sneak preview of as yet unpublished stories.

Freya dislikes people who constantly ask her when her next book will appear or want to know what she’s working on right now. She finds that kills her creativity dead. Freya loathes people who offer her an “honest review” in exchange for a free copy of one of her books. Freya hates agents, editors and publishers who don’t even bother acknowledging they’ve received her work, let alone actually get back to her with a result. All the aforementioned people are blacklisted…

July – Writing

14 July, 2014
Back from being Without Words! Back online again! Did you miss me?!
I am a writer. I write words. But how do I write? How does the process actually work? The more I look into it, the more my creativity disappears, so I’ve stopped trying to analyse this gift. Instead, I have managed to note brief moments of inspiration and watch myself struggle as I write, as well as fly with the flow and pour out words upon the page. I’m hoping that the clippings over the next few weeks will help you understand why I am a writer and inspire you to write something too…
