The Butterfly Tree

15 May, 2020

Elsewhere in the garden the air is filled with fragrance; rose, wisteria and honeysuckle. In other flowerbeds, the plants stand neatly in their own space, not intruding on their neighbours. The soil there is weed-free and every plant knows its place. Many people wander through the old royal gardens on days when the sun shines. But no one comes to this corner.

I suppose it was the lack of order that drew me. I like bright colours and sweet perfumes but the riotous, unchecked growth beyond the silent fountains caught my eye. Others hurried by, looking for order and colour. Not me. I squeezed through the rusted, wrought-iron railings and trod on uncut grass, feeling dew soak my sandals and feet.

Behind me rose the rusty iron fence with sharp-edged stingers and needle-like thistles to deter the faint-hearted. On three sides, brick walls rose, partially concealed by the fecund growth of thin branches, narrow leaves and great sprays of purple-hued flowers. In the centre of the uncut grass, stood a single, stone seat; I sat upon it, marvelling at the sights and scents around me.

The breeze moved gently in the sheltered spot, making the long tendrils of flowers bob and weave, like slow-moving fireworks. Purple was the colour that I recognised first but as I gazed, I saw the varying shades; pink, lilac, violet, mauve, lavender, fuschia, magenta and white …

The Butterfly Tree – cover reveal

28 March, 2020

This is the cover for my forthcoming short story collection: The Butterfly Tree!

What do you think?

I’m planning on launching The Butterfly Tree in May – will you buy it?!

Thank you for following my journey through Clouds – I hope you enjoyed the paintings I produced to accompany my quest!

Over the summer I won’t be blogging quite as much; every 2 weeks or so. I’m exploring the different Gardens I’ve known over the years in short prose, as well as posting some of my poster paint experiments on paper!

Over at my other blog, Pure Haiku, my guests and I will be exploring the theme of Translucence from 1st April! Why don’t you join us there?

For the next few weeks I’ll be taking a blogging break and I look forward to catching up with you all on your blogs at the beginning of May!

An Ancient Song

3 April, 2019

An Ancient Song explores the dark recesses of Otta’s soul and gives Erl a new meaning to his life.

An Ancient Song continues the twins’ quest for the “Unicorn’s Trail” with a shocking revelation at the end.

An Ancient Song takes the reader into a different world where the races are divided and immigrants seek to find their way in a strange and hostile land.

This is Volume Three of The Kaerling. It was a difficult book to write as I explored Otta’s inexplicable dislike of the despised Suryan. Like Nagaru, I wanted her to admit she had killed a man and to overcome her irrational prejudice towards the travellers who protect her.

Not everything is resolved in this volume, but, as Nagaru tells her towards the end, it’s a beginning!

Want to find out exactly how Otta and Erl escape from Aura Vere? Want to know how they discover the truth about the “Unicorn’s Trail”? Want to meet more of the Kaerlings who are both attractive and repelling at the same time?

If the answer is yes to one or more of the above questions, you need to buy An Ancient Song, now! Available at Amazon UK, Amazon US, iBooks, Nook, Kobo and many other online stores.

Until you showed your face …

9 October, 2018

Feeling nervous, Otta followed Erl and Derri through the gate and entered the guardhouse. The heat struck Otta like a physical blow and for a moment she found it hard to breathe. Then she became aware of how her fingers and toes hurt.

“Come to the fire, travellers.” One of the guards spoke. “You must be nearly perished with cold.”

“It has been rather chilly.” Erl remarked, setting Derri down before the fire.

The guards laughed at Erl’s comment and the child cringed, staring around. Otta hurried over to him, reassuring him with quiet words. She pulled off his wraps and gloves and made him stretch out his hands to the fire. Derri did as he was told and stared into the dancing flames, entranced. Otta started removing her own woollen gloves and fur muffler as Erl continued to joke with the guards. A sudden halt in conversation indicated that something was wrong. She glanced up as she removed her hood, enjoying the heat on her face. Without exception every guard was staring at her. Outside the traders’ wagons lumbered past.

What’s wrong? she asked Erl silently.

No idea, he replied. They were fine until you showed your face …

Ambassador

1 October, 2018

At last, it’s here!

Ambassador_Cover_LI

Ambassador is the second volume in The Kaerling series.

Otta and Erl have had to take refuge with Derri in the city of Aura Vere while winter storms ravage the land. Due to a misunderstanding at the gates, Otta is forced to act as a Kaerling in order to get free board and lodging.

Evading Nagaru’s wish to talk about the Chandar she inadvertently killed, Otta spends her time looking for clues about the Unicorn’s Trail and trying to find out about Derri’s parentage. Erl, meanwhile, finds work with the despised Suryan and regains a measure of confidence, even though his memory is still blank.

pat_unicorn_17But the Kaerlings are aware of Otta’s presence. How long can she remain hidden from them? Why do they think she is deflecting? And why does she resemble the female ambassador so much? Will the twins be able to evade the Kaerlings before it is too late …

Find out in Ambassador, available now at Amazon UK, Amazon US, iBooks, Kobo & Nook.
