Freya’s Novels

25 April, 2018

It’s nearly the summer holidays! Have you stocked up yet on your summer reading? If you haven’t, here are some suggestions …
If you enjoy romance and dark magic mixed with intrigue in a fantastical setting, can I suggest my Isu Magan series? Both books are available as ebooks and paperbacks. Vintrig’s Kingdom ($3) begins the tale of Isu Magan, a lonely princess who is the only heir to the kingdom’s founder. Her life is bound by taboo and she is content not to marry until she meets the travelling musician, Sama Conn, and falls in love with him.
The sequel, Vintrig’s Throne ($3) concludes the tale, but not before Isu’s hopes have been raised and then cruelly dashed. Although she is crowned queen, Isu finds herself on trial for her life and only one thing can save her; The Law of Substitution!
But if you prefer humourous novels, then perhaps Dragonscale Leggings might be more suitable for you. But, I have to warn you, it is a dangerous book to read. Why? Because if you don’t have a sense of humour, hate strong female leads and don’t like fantasy worlds, you’ll be wasting your time reading it!

This is chick-lit in a fantasy world. Think Alice in Wonderland meets Bridget Jones’ Diary. Come and adventure with Dracomagan and her trusty stallion, Tygar, as they travel through the Otherworld, trying to find her memory, evade Merlin and keep on the right side of the law.
At present, Dragonscale Leggings ($3) is only available as an ebook – the paperback should be out by Christmas 2018! Happy Reading!

Last post for 2017 …

18 December, 2017
Well, here we are at the end of 2017! And what a year it’s been. Moving house, a new business and publishing another novel! How has your year been?

I’m going offline now for a few weeks. I have scheduled a few things to appear at my Facebook page (just in case people miss me while I’m away!) and a post or two may appear here in the New Year as I’m not yet quite sure when exactly I’ll be online again. So if you comment or leave a message for me, please don’t be offended if I don’t respond for a few weeks. It’s because I’m not online! I always need to detox from the internet and my computer screen at this time of year and this year I really need to! Things have been too busy sometimes.
Don’t forget to download your copy of Vintrig’s Throne. And if you’re waiting for the paperback to come out, keep a look out here for an announcement when it finally appears!
If you would like to continue to receive my Newsletter (it’s FREE!) please make sure you email me BEFORE 31st January 2018 at dragonscaleclippings@gmail.com so I know to keep you on the mailing list! You get a free short story every year, poetry expressing my deepest thoughts and emotions as well as a short editorial about my real life happenings!
For now, I wish all my readers and supporters a very Happy Christmas! Have a peaceful and relaxing time and I will see you all sometime in the New Year! Much love, Freya xxx

An extract from Vintrig’s Throne

21 November, 2017
Isu Magan, Queen of Vintrig’s Kingdom has been found guilty of a crime she has not committed. Her Counsellor pronounces the death sentence upon her and she is dragged to the block …
The floor suddenly impacted with her knees and she was jolted back into her body, feeling the pain in her legs and ankles. Dach tied her wrists behind her with a length of rope. The sound of metal on metal dispersed the ringing in her ears and brought her attention back to the headsman’s block. Hunter stood to her right, head covered in a black hood, his empty eyes glittering as he looked down on her. The long-handled axe of execution leant against his legs. It had been made in the image of the axe lost at Queen Ruath’s beheading, she recalled unemotionally. She wondered if this axe would remain embedded in the block once it had struck off her head. Dach placed a length of soft, black cloth around her eyes and as he tied the knot at the back of her head, terror consumed her.

She was going to die. But she couldn’t die. She was immortal and immortals could not die. Was she really immortal? The Truths she had experienced earlier in the day seemed far away and ethereal. Doubts flocked within her. Once she was dead, what happened then? Was it sleep and darkness? Or was it torment and agony as was hinted at in her worst nightmares? Her body began to shake uncontrollably and she felt tears coursing down her face. Dach’s rough hand forced her to bow over the stone, forced her forehead to rest upon the cold surface. How could it be so cold, she asked herself, when it was close to the fires? It was at that moment that she knew for certain she was not immortal. She feared death and she feared dying. If she had been immortal she would have laughed in Jya’s face. But Jya had lied about her immortality, just as he had lied about many other things.
She heard Hunter spitting on his hands before he took hold of the axe shaft for the killing blow. Images flashed into her mind: her nurse laughing and telling her tales of the old days, Helmgar cutting down an Eastern trader who had dared to touch her hand, Minah humming softly while she sewed, Blodig swearing eternal love for her beneath a star-filled sky, and Sama laughing and smiling, his blue eyes showing his love for her.
Hunter’s leather garments creaked as he picked up the axe. Isu heard the whoosh of air as he raised the instrument of execution above his head. She tensed herself, fearing pain from the blade as it cut through skin and bone. All she could think of was darkness and death; what was it like on the other side? The uncontrollable trembling ceased, replaced by a dull nausea. Hunter inhaled. Isu swallowed hard.
“Stay!” A voice called that made her heart pound painfully. “I invoke the Law of Substitution.”
